Wolf Hall
I am clearly a philistine as this has been universally praised as the best thing ever but is anybody else struggling to keep awake watching this? I can appreciate the quality of it and clearly Mark Rylance is a great actor but it is so slow and I struggle to work out who is who. I had the same problem with the book!

Anybody else with me on this?

Loved the books, loving the series, and I ain't exactly Brain of Britain.

What's so hard to follow?

Re: Wolf Hall
To be fair Hilary Mantel does do that trick of using personal pronouns to refer to people a lot in the books leaving you to work who "he" or "she" is for a while. I quite liked that in the end as it gave the books a bit of mystery.

The TV series is excellent and Mark Rylance conveys a lot in small gestures, a slightly pursed lip means he is really, really angry.

Re: Wolf Hall
Absolutely love this program. Rylance is the bollocks.

Disagree with the concept of the books but the series is brilliant.

Fraid not Mr Bunbury,

Both the book and this adaptation has got me hooked.

As a side note, I have also just finished a 4 part documentary with David Starkey about the life of old Harry8 and it really does help put the book in to perspective.

The only thing that has let the book and TV show down is that it hasnt really showed how Henry was truly in love with Mrs Aragon and how he was really cut up about ditching her.

Re: Wolf Hall
Loving it too, if it was all guns and car crashes I then wouldn't be able to follow it.

It did start slow but that was to introduce the characters and how they feature as the series goes along.

Loving and can't wait for next week.
Show's you cruel and scary that period of time was.

The only thing I am not sure is who and why some of the characters are heretics. Not sure if Henry and Cromwell have actually stated they have left the Church in Rome yet.
Also not sure what the Tindall character is , has he broken away from Rome too?

Tynedale translated large chunks of bible from greek and hebrew texts that were older than the latin ones that the Catholic church used.

Ok I thought this would be the response! I do know the history and context and I would be really floundering without that but even so it's not quite doing it for me.

Re: Wolf Hall
I've not read the books but loving the series. I covered this period of history at school so have a bit of knowledge about the main characters and am able to follow it.

I think it's fine if it's not captured everyone, so no biggie Sir Bunbury, your head remains attached to your body.

Enjoying it. Initially gave up on the book (same reason, never quite knew who was being referred to), then Nurse shamed me in to giving it another go. Glad she did, as I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The TV version has managed to convey the sense of chaos and excitement of the times. One day you're a heretic, the next you're not, and your life depends on it.

Would have all been easier to follow if every fucker wasn't called Thomas!

Durs - A Place of Greater Safety is even better.

Got Bodies to read first! Sadly nowadays my bedtime reading is a choice between a book or the newspaper, and the newspaper is less intense so generally wins.

The Holy Maid should've been more mental.

Other than that, enjoying it.

The Tudors was great fun but this is serious drama. Agreed.

But you can't knock James Frane.

Brilliant series and Rylance is superb. Acting is more than just words and his facial expressions portray far more meaning.
